Open Rehearsals
Open rehearsals are an opportunity for us to deepen our ties with the community beyond performing for them, which while wonderful, is a very small slice of musicianship. By extending hospitality to people who are curious about what we do we than stay in touch with the impact of our tradition, give others a foot in the door to this world, and build the city’s support for our music. People will be invited to sit and watch, become stand partners, or ask questions. No photos, please.
New Rep and Rep In General
Going forward the goal is to do a 50/50 mix of old and new material. It’s good to always be learning new stuff, it keeps things fresh and invested, but it’s also nice to have the chance to spend some more time with old favourites. By getting to know charts really well we can start to get creative with how they’re out together and make improvisation and ensemble playing something more than the polite 16 bar breaks that some charts suggest. We’ll start working on memorising our music, even if we start with just one measure at a time.
Brass Workshop and Lessons with Eric Probst – Afternoon of October 10th
Eric Probst is a very good brass player and educator. He plays tuba and trombone and euphonium and baritone horn, and is accomplished in jazz, classical, and silver band music. He’s a funny as hell and easy to get along with.
The workshop is open to everyone, and will focus on brass techniques, how to make effective and economical use of practice time, and ensemble playing for brass musicians. The workshop will be followed by half hour private lessons.
Location, Time, and $$$ TBD
How to Swing Hard Workshop with Liam Gallagher
Not Liam again. Playing good swing feel on your own and in a group can be mystifying. The good news is that you don’t need to be jazz Gandalf to have good time and you don’t need to put up with the people who keeping blaming the drummer for missing their entrance! With a small selection of clear demonstrations and susinct exercises you too can swing hard, and learn to make artistic and expressive choices about how you feel and play time.
Location TBD, 1pm to 3:30pm, free$ for GJS ensemble members, $$$ for the public.
Cornerstone Jazz Jam
3rd Monday of the month from 6-9
If you’re in this band you’re already playing a lot of jazz and I’m sure you’re family is starting to miss you. That being said, jam sessions are the place where a lot of the vocabulary and cultural ways of making jazz music as opposed to any other style really start to make sense. The cowboy cookie is also excellent. Otherwise you know where I’ll be on the 3rd Monday of every month so this is your chance to know where not to be!
